Overview
DGSI Tiltmeters can be directly connected to a THREAD or used with an M-Logger. If an M-Logger is being used, please visit the M-Logger Help Article. If the Tiltmeter is directly connected to the THREAD, learn how to add a tiltmeter below.
Adding a DGSI Tiltmeter
Ensure that the THREAD is turned on and connected to the DGSI Tiltmeter directly via one of its Device ports
1. Navigate to the Connectivity Module
2. Press the button directly on a THREAD to add a Device to it. If your THREAD does not appear here, you may still need to Add Your THREAD as a Connection.
3. You may also add a device from the button in the Devices and Sensors section.
4. Begin by typing in "DGSI MEMS Tiltmeter" and select the name once it autocompletes in the search box (example below).
5. Type in the Connect Code of the THREAD that the Device will be connected to. It will already be pre-filled if the button on the THREAD was used.
6. Next, select the THREAD communication port that the device is plugged into, Device 1 or 2.
7. Specify if the tiltmeter is Biaxial or Uniaxial.
Note: If the wrong setting is selected it cannot be changed after the sensor is saved.
8. Press Save.
Sensor Configuration
To start viewing all Tiltmeter calculations, certain setup parameters will need to be entered. Without entering the following parameters, you will be limited to displaying only raw analog measurements - VoltageA, VoltageB, and VoltageT.
Navigate to the sensor configuration page of the Tiltmeter you wish to modify.
Sensor Orientation
The X/Y Axis will always be fixed relative to the Tiltmeter's reference indicator (Mounting Stud). The Y+ Axis will follow the mounting stud axis as seen below.
Note: Tilt the top of the sensor in the Y+ direction will result in a positive Tilt Y measurement.
SERIAL NUMBER - Tilt X/Y
Entering the Serial Number of the Tiltmeter will automatically apply the manufacturer's calibration factors that are necessary to transform the raw analog sensor values to engineering units (e.g. angular tilt). The serial number can be found on the side of the tilt sensor (example shown below).
Once the serial number is entered, Tilt X/Y calculations will automatically be available for selection.
REFERENCE DATE - ∆
The reference date field allows a user to enter a date that delta calculations will be calculated from. Delta metrics are indicated with the ∆. When a date is entered, sensemetrics will find the reading closest to that date and use that reading as the reference reading.
Note: If no reference date is chosen, delta calculations will automatically use the first data point in your time range selected as the reference date. This is pertinent for all data visualization tools (e.g. Maps, Tables, Graphs, etc).
DEVICE AZIMUTH - Northing/Easting
The Tiltmeter does not inherently know North/East. In order for North/East to be correctly represented, you will need to specify the Sensor Azimuth. This is done by measuring the angle from North to the Reference indicator in a clockwise direction.
Reference Indicator - The Mounting Stud is the sensor's Reference Indicator (Shown in the image above).
Specify the Sensor Azimuth to use Northing/Easting calculations.
STRUCTURE AZIMUTH - Transverse/Longitudinal
This field will allow you to orient the Transverse/Longitudinal Axis in any desired direction. It is useful for finding movement in the direction of a specific structure or expected direction of deformation/movement. See the Structure Azimuth Section on instructions on how to properly set it up.
Specify the Structure Azimuth to use Transverse/Longitudinal calculations.
GAUGE LENGTH - X/Y
Enter the length of the structure from the base to the top of the structure. This will use a trig calculation with the Tilt X/Y angle to create a X/Y Vector at the top of the structure. This can be used when you want to calculate the tilt of an entire structure while only using one tilt sensor.
Note: This parameter assumes that the "structure" is rigid throughout.
Specify the Structure Height to use X/Y calculations and allow vectors in Map View.
ZENITH ANGLE
This field allows the user to specify a zenith angle which is the angle of the sensor off the Z (aka vertical) axis.
Note: This parameter will only affect the Z position metric.
